What is Atal Innovation Mission? It is a venture of Government of India to promote a platform for entrepreneurship and innovation in country.  National Institution for Transforming India (Niti Aayog) of Government of India has launched Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) along with Self-Employment and Talent Utilization program to promote the platform for the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. Atal Innovation Mission’s main goal is to provide a platform for the promotion of world-class Innovation Hubs, Grand Challenges, Start-up businesses and other self-employment activities, particularly in technology driven areas.

There are two core functions of Atal Innovation Mission.

Entrepreneurship promotion: Promotion through Self-Employment and Talent Utilization, wherein innovators would be supported and mentored to become successful entrepreneurs.

Innovation promotion: To provide a platform where innovative ideas are generated.

To register these two core functions Atal Innovation Mission has subprograms called Atal Tinkering Labs, Atal Incubation Centers, Scale-up support to Established Incubators.

Atal Tinkering Labs is a subprogram introduced to establish in the education sector of the country to provide the culture of innovation in children’s of India. The primary aim of ATL’s is to foster curiosity, creativity, and imagination in young minds; and inculcate skills such as design mindset, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing etc.

ATL is a work space where young minds can give shape to their ideas through hands on do-it-yourself mode; and learn innovation skills. Young children will get a chance to work with tools and equipment to understand the concepts of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). ATL would contain educational and learning ‘do it yourself’ kits and equipment on – science, electronics, robotics, open source microcontroller boards, sensors and 3D printers and computers. Other desirable facilities include meeting rooms and video conferencing facility.

In order to foster inventiveness among students, ATL will conduct different activities ranging from regional and national level competitions, exhibitions, workshops on problem solving, designing and fabrication of products, lecture series etc. at periodic intervals.

Atal Innovation Mission will provide grant-in-aid that includes a one-time establishment cost of Rs. 10 lakh and operational expenses of Rs. 10 lack for a maximum period of 5 years to each ATL.

Atal Incubation Centres is another subprogram of Atal Innovation Mission to establish incubation centres across the country to provide platform and encourage innovative Entrepreneurship. These AIC centres would nurture innovative start-up businesses in their pursuit to become scalable and sustainable enterprises.

The AICs would create world class incubation facilities across various parts of India with suitable physical infrastructure in terms of capital equipment and operating facilities, coupled with the availability of sectoral experts for mentoring the start-ups, business planning support, access to seed capital, industry partners, trainings and other relevant components required for encouraging innovative start-ups. Moreover, AICs would be established in subject specific areas such as manufacturing, transport, energy, health, education, agriculture, water and sanitation etc.

Entities such as such as higher educational institutions, R&D institutes, corporate sector, alternative investment funds registered with SEBI, business accelerators, group of individuals, and individuals are eligible to apply.

Ata innovation Mission will provide a grant-in-aid of upto Rs. 10 crore for a maximum period of 5 years to cover the capital and operational expenditures to establish the AIC.

The applicant would have to provide at least 10,000 sq. ft. of ready-to-use, built-up space, for the exclusive use of the AIC.

Scale-up Support to Established Incubation Centres is a program for those Incubation Centres which has been already establish and need more facilities for innovations.

There is a need to create world class incubation centres across various parts of India with adequate infrastructure and availability of sectoral experts for mentoring start-up businesses, and develop an ecosystem by strengthening linkages amongst incubation centres, universities and corporates.

Atal Innovation Mission envisages to augment capacity of the Established Incubation Centres in the country. It will provide financial scale-up support to enable Established Incubation Centres.  The scheme would radically transform the start-up ecosystem in the country by upgrading the Established Incubation Centres to world-class standards.

All program under Atal Innovation Mission are aimed to encourage and support the people in India, who have new ideas, innovations. Atal Tinkering Labs are to make sure that, students and children learn the happiness of experimentation and learning. Also, with incubation centres, the team will provide mentorship and financing grants to students, young entrepreneurs and small businesses.

By creating mindset of self employment and moving towards creating jobs , everybody will think distantly and looks at building something that will help the country at large grow. More self employers guiding students, there will be a stronger ecosystem that builds efficient start-ups.
